WIL 2019 Canada Day-to-Day Schedule

Please note: field tours and schedule may be adapted. We will update as details develop here on this page. A final schedule will be shared with all participants in early September.

Saturday October 5

  • 3:00PM Check-in begins at the Calgary HI Hostel
  • 4:00PM Opening session, getting to know each other, building community
  • 6:00PM Dinner at the hostel
  • 7:30PM A trip to Ol’ Beautiful Brewery. Past WIL Alumni will be joining us & you can have a tour of the brewery if desire

Sunday October 6

Field Tour to Siksika First Nation

  • 8:00AM Departure from HI Calgary to Siksika First Nation
  • 9:30AM Arrival at Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park
  • 9:40AM Opening Ceremony begins; welcome prayer with Elder, cultural learning session
  • 10:30AM Workshop sessions
    Workshop 1: Land Claims, a focus on Siksika water history
    Workshop 2: Shifting Perspectives, focusing on Blackfoot water values
  • 11:45AM-12:45PM Lunch featuring traditional foods such as berry soup and the opportunity to peruse the museum as well as booths of local artisan vendors (bring some cash!)
  • 1:00PM Stretch the legs and walk to the East Siksika Waste Water Treatment Plant for a tour with Ron Doore. The tour will happen in two groups of 25
  • 3:00PM Bus departs for the Calgary Hostel
  • 4:30PM Arrive back at the hostel for some downtime
  • 6:00PM Dinner at the hostel
  • 6:45PM Walk to nearby to Calgary Public Library
  • 7:30PM Innovation Masterclass Part 1 and SDG overview

Monday October 7

  • 8:15AM Bus departs Calgary Hostel
  • 9:00-11:00AM Tour at Pine Creek WWTP and Advancing Canadian Wastewater Assets (ACWA), an innovative partnership between the University of Calgary and City of Calgary to advance wastewater treatment technologies as well as address environmental and human health issues.
  • 11:15AM Back on the bus for an on the go lunch as we head to Dale Hodges Park.
  • 12-1:45PM Tour of Dales Hodges Park with resource guests Rene Letourneau and artists from Sans Facon, Tristan and Charles.
  • 2:00PM Back on the bus to drive to the Ghost Lake Reservoir
  • 2:45PM – 3:45PM Talk with Ryan MacDonald about how the river is managed for different purposes, contrast large infrastructure with a natural system, and discuss challenges/opportunities associated with watershed management along the eastern slopes of Alberta.
  • 4:30PM Arrive at the field station
  • 6:00PM Dinner
  • 7:15 – 7:45PM Innovation Masterclass Part 2
  • 7:45 – 9:00PM Team Formation Part

Tuesday October 8

  • 8:00AM Breakfast
  • 9:00AM Group Check-in
  • 9:15AM Outdoor leadership activity, weather permitting. Systems Theory (Theory U)
  • 11:00AM David Sauchyn presentation on water and climate change and dialogue
  • 12:00PM Lunch
  • 1 – 4:30PM Series of workshops with Resource Guests (RGs) and participants (rotation)
    (1) Flood Management & Mitigation
    (2) Latest Technology in Water Conservation
    (3) Indigenous Consultation
    (4) Water-Energy-Food Nexus
    (5) Urban Resiliency
    (6) Collaborative Watershed Planning
  • 4:30 – 6:00PM Free time
  • 6:00PM Dinner
  • 7:00PM Team Formation Part 2

Wednesday October 9

  • 8:00AM Breakfast
  • 9:00AM Leadership and Skill TrainingHosting self, practicing conversation, participatory leadership, co-creation
  • 11:00AM Future Scenarios Foundations
  • 12:00PM Lunch
  • 1:00PM Working in project team with RGs support
  • 4:00PM Harvest & sharing back

  • 7:30PM Integration Jam Session and opportunity for everyone to showcase their work and research

Thursday October 10

  • 10:00AM Collaborative Innovation teams working hard preparing for your pitch
