Our Methods

“I greatly admire how Waterlution creates space for all voices at the table”

–Facilitator, The Canadian Water Innovation Lab, 2010

Facilitation

Facilitation is the process of enabling groups to work cooperatively and effectively. All of Waterlution’s programs employ facilitated learning processes to ensure meaningful, inclusive knowledge sharing, and connecting across diverse viewpoints. Some facilitation methods include: World Café, Pro-Action Café, Open Space, U-process, Appreciative Inquiry, Future Search… and more!

Waterlution also offers facilitation training opportunities through the Art of Hosting Water Dialogues workshops and the Transformative Leaders of the Future program.

The future is uncertain in many industries as financial markets fluctuate, large-scale proposals around natural resources are being negotiated, and building the leadership potential of organizations and communities of all sizes is becoming crucial. Scenario planning is a strategic planning tool for leaders to map out plausible future stories of how their organization or project may develop based on a number of influences. Using a creative approach and facilitated dialogue, it assesses current trends alongside relevant political, economic, social, environmental, cultural, and international dynamics. Scenarios encourage all actors to co-create plausible theories of what might happen in the future. The objective of the process is to develop multi-layered “future stories” as the foundation for decision-making.

Waterlution offers scenario planning workshops around topics related to water, sustainability, resource extraction and similar areas. Whether your organization is embarking on a full scenario planning project or considering it as a tool for a series of meetings—we will work with you and your team to ensure the best results for your purpose.

LEADERSHIP
DEVELOPMENT

The biggest challenge we see to achieving healthy communities and healthy watersheds is in developing resilient leaders with both the practical understanding of water issues and the facilitation skills to champion positive change.

To date, we have trained over 100 stand-out Canadian water practitioners, stewards and experts in group facilitation. Among these are “Waterlution Associates,” our community-based ambassadors and workshop facilitators, trained in integrated participative change processes and methods to engage local stakeholders in meaningful dialogue. Learn about our past Associates here and our Transformative Leaders of the Future here.

We provide networking platforms and online tools for water stewards to stay connected.

Our Hub Network, social media communities, list-serve and community-based Associates work to foster and develop strong communities of action.
