Our Approach

14 Years of Waterlution

At Waterlution, we invest significant resources into developing young leaders by blending their current assets with new techniques in generating innovative ideas and cultivating strategic skills to envision and act on the needs of the future.

Develop
Future
Leaders

We challenge traditional methods of engagement and advocacy by curating an interactive, inclusive and hands-on experience to build strategic leadership skills for millennials facing the needs of the future. We invest significant resources into developing programs specific to future young leaders through cross-sector sharing and mentoring, together with an ‘on the ground’ journey to discover new viewpoints and find their water voice.

We are skilled facilitators that place dynamic social engagement at the centre of our story. Waterlution experiments with new engagement practices to offer curated shared experiences that spark dialogue between people of diverse backgrounds in respectful, inclusive spaces where they can discuss important and complex water topics, together. With 14 years of experience in facilitating dialogue, we believe that good dialogue results in thoughtful, focused and meaningful action. Its simple: when people can share ideas in a fun environment, they form a bond and open themselves up to collaboration on ideas surrounding important topics around water. We aim to facilitate these discussions designed to move the group forward with purpose.

BUILD GLOBAL
NETWORKS &
21ST CENTURY SKILLS

Interconnectedness is an inherent quality of water, and we actively seek out diverse individuals and groups, pursuing a shared water experience. We learn on an ongoing basis from local watershed groups, Indigenous communities, entrepreneurs across sectors, students, scientists, corporations of all sizes, all levels of government, and local, national and international NGOs. We often find our own excitement builds when we develop relationships with “non-water” folks.* Many of our projects and programs offer a multi-stakeholder design, where we tap into our diverse network.

*Technically, we are all water folks, some people have made that conscious connection and others have not—we engage with both groups as they offer us a great variety of insight and expand our own work and knowledge.

We believe creativity is the key ingredient enabling innovative and inspired solutions. Using constant and creative ambition, we aim to inspire our participants in unique experiences where they can co-create using a fresh approach to their water work. There is no ceiling to our commitment to creativity, and Waterlution’s workshops, Hub events, and Water Innovation Labs incorporate a focus on innovation from design to delivery. It is our belief that creative engagement encourages peer collaboration, which ultimately leads to innovative ideas for a successful water future.

CREATE
OPPORTUNITIES
& INSPIRE
ENTREPRENEURS

We believe new entrepreneurial approaches within the water sector require a vibrant network to energize the community and create new and meaningful results. By showcasing successful entrepreneurs, experimenting with new projects, and gaining insight from a variety of leaders, we are witnessing the immense potential to understand and contribute to a resilient water future. At the Water Innovation Lab 2013, twelve projects were pitched and received feedback from guests and participants. Many of these projects were fresh and had potential to shape the future of the water sector. Waterlution’s vision is for the next generation of decision-makers – across all sectors and stakeholder groups – to be strong, informed leaders with a passion for and commitment to healthy watersheds.

As facilitators of water dialogue, we create spaces to listen, learn, create and repeat. Listening to our global communities, participants and water leaders is how we learn to curate experiences more creatively, and build larger and more diverse networks as a platform to share in water dialogue.

In the last decade, we have created a growing global network with water as the centre by which we all connect to one another. Our shared stories both in the Great Lakes basin and beyond, evoke a positive and energized look to the future of water.

Our Principles
  • We recognize and celebrate the interdependence of water in all of our lives
  • We are locally oriented and globally aware in exploring our relationship with water
  • We trust the power of small-scale, community-led initiatives in making a difference in the global sphere
  • We connect diverse stakeholders, bringing them together as equal players
  • We balance vision, action and reflection
  • We invite creative modes of expression into learning experiences
  • We seek unlikely partnerships that reflect these principles
Content & Process

What do mean, when we say, “content and process” are the two key drivers of systemic change?

There exists excellent water science, policy, and knowledge (“content”) across Canada and globally, however, much of that experience can be lost or not acted upon if not well-communicated (“process”).

At Waterlution, we aim to energize the water community through a variety of facilitation techniques that enable the effective transfer of knowledge and perspectives between individuals and organizations. Processes used at Waterlution include team dynamics, cross-sector collaboration, the breakdown of complex topics, the encouragement of play and the use of scenario planning, where appropriate.
